When to Use an Oral Irrigator – Before or After Brushing?

19 October 2023

Before using an oral irrigator, remember that it cannot replace a toothbrush. Likewise, a toothbrush will never replace an oral irrigator. These two tools complement each other for two purposes: removing bacterial plaque and preventing dental diseases.

So, when should you use an oral irrigator?

It serves a crucial role in maintaining healthy teeth: cleaning the gum pockets, which often lead to serious gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis.

But when should you use an oral irrigator—before or after brushing? The tooth cleaning sequence remains the same. You start with a toothbrush, which effectively removes the main impurities, and then proceed to irrigate the hard-to-reach areas with the oral irrigator.

Using an Oral Irrigator: The Correct Method

Step 1: Fill the reservoir with lukewarm tap water. Pay attention to the liquid’s temperature, ensuring it’s comfortable (room temperature or slightly warmer) to ensure that even sensitive teeth and gums can tolerate the cleaning procedure.

Step 2: Attach the detachable head.

Step 3: Position the detachable head correctly in your mouth. The irrigator’s head should be aimed at an angle of about 45 degrees to the gums or teeth.

Step 4: Adjust the water pressure and start the device. It’s best to set the power to the minimum value and gradually increase the pressure to a comfortable level as you clean your teeth.

Step 5: Stop the device, remove the detachable head, and empty the water from the reservoir.

Remember that an oral irrigator is not a substitute for a traditional toothbrush. It is used as a supplement. Its primary purpose is to clean the mouth after brushing and to have a therapeutic effect on the gums by massaging them.

How Often Can You Use an Oral Irrigator?

A complete oral hygiene routine with an oral irrigator should be performed twice a day. However, depending on personal needs, it can be used more frequently as necessary.

Traditional flossing is not the best method as it can cause gum injuries. For this reason, dentists recommend using an oral irrigator, as it is gentler on the gums and helps prevent gum diseases. Some even suggest replacing traditional floss with an oral irrigator. In addition to being less invasive, it provides a deeper and more effective cleaning than traditional floss.

If you wear braces, thorough cleaning is necessary after each meal. Incomplete care poses the risk of dental infections.

How Long Does Teeth Cleaning with an Oral Irrigator Take?

The duration of cleaning is always individual. For maintaining orthodontic appliances, there are more challenging-to-reach areas, so the irrigation time may be slightly longer. Implants or crowns require gentle cleaning, so the jet’s power should be reduced, and the duration extended. On average, 1-2 minutes are sufficient for a complete dental irrigation.

An oral irrigator is a significant aid that makes oral care more efficient, reducing the risk of dental cavities and other dental problems. It operates gently without traumatizing the gums. By following the usage guide, you’ll quickly learn how to use it correctly, making the care of your beautiful smile even easier.
